Self-Growth Sunday: How To Concentrate Effectively.

how to concentrateNever before in history has it been more difficult than working out how to concentrate.

In our modern world everything is screaming for our attention – mobile phones ringing, text messages going off, the radio, television, and ads on buses and billboards.

In a sense – we automatically create a filter to all of these things just so that we can survive and not go insane.

Here are some tips on how to concentrate more effectively – so that you can be more focused and achieve the results that you are after with whatever you are concentrating on!

Tips On How To Concentrate.

It really comes back to those same simple key things you hear everywhere. The ironic thing is that in today’s world everyone is too busy to find the time to do these things!

1. Daily exercise.

Get your body moving. Breathe and give your body the oxygen it wants. It will say thankyou and help you to focus. We’re not designed to sit in front of a computer all day. We’re designed to move and be active. Get outside and move!

2. Take Breaks.

Take a ten minute break every hour, and make sure to stop for meals. To re-charge your nervous system lie on your back in your breaks. Albert Einstein got most of his inspiration and ideas while taking baths – often for hours at a time. He understood the value of giving himself breaks and taking a lot of rest. He knew how to concentrate effectively.

3. Certain foods are bad for concentration.

The caffeine in coffee will give you a hit of focus – however in the long-run it actually diminishes your ability to concentrate. Did you know an apple will help you stay awake more effectively than a cup of coffee? Eat low GI foods and avoid sugar. Foods such as fruit and nuts are great to effectively help with your concentration. Addictive foods like Mars Bars and Coke unfortunately will make things harder for you (although they taste so good!).

4. Change Your Environment.

Have you noticed how working in the same place over and over makes it harder to concentrate. How to concentrate effectively so that you can achieve the results you want is often about changing where you are working now and again. Mix it up. Diversity in your work environment makes a huge difference – try it!

5. Plan Out Your Work.

How to concentrate effectively is also about looking at your long-term goals. I highly recommend sitting down for as long as an hour and looking at your goals over the next few weeks. Are you actually doing what you should be right now? Are you doing what needs to be done – or are you avoiding certain tasks. When you know where you are heading it makes it easier to concentrate on the one task in front of you.

6. Don’t Multi-task.

I love the book ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’ by Tim Ferris and I highly recommend it if you haven’t read it. Tim writes that no matter what don’t multi-task. I took his advice and it has made a huge difference in how I work. Doing many different tasks at once is actually less productive in the longer-term. Keep it simple.

7. Meditation.

If you have never meditated I highly recommend it. It grounds you into your body and brings you focus. It’s very difficult for many people – however you can just do short bursts of it. Just try closing your eyes and pay close attention to your breathing for 20 minutes. If you want to really become a production powerhouse and learn how to concentrate using 100% of your human capability – meditation is the answer. You will be amazed.

8. Turn off your phone/Facebook/TV/Radio.

Avoid distractions. It amazes me how many people work with all of these things going at the same time. How to concentrate effectively is all about total focus. These things take away your focus. Turn them off, or go away from them.

  1. Hi Luke! Great tips on finding our way through all the distractions pulling at us daily. I meditate everyday too and it really makes a difference. I do need to add a few more of these tips to my routine though, like changing my environment, not multi tasking, taking regular breaks and exercising more!
