The Advantages and Disadvantages of Outsourcing.

I have spent the last three years hiring many virtual assistants to do work for me, and I have had some awful experiences in that time. There definitely are some disadvantages of outsourcing you need to be aware of. Here are some of them:

Common Disadvantages Of Outsourcing.

QUALITY ISSUES.

You hire someone to work for you who claims to be an expert. They’re simply not. They waste your money and even worse – your time (very common for SEO link builders).

CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES.

You give your usernames and passwords to someone in another country who you have never even met in person. How do you know if you can trust this person? The simple fact is that you don’t. I personally logged in to my host one day to find a virtual assistant of mine was hosting his own web-sites on my host without my permission?? What the?

LOSS OF CONTROL.

You’re not doing the job anymore and so don’t have your eyes on the task involved. If your virtual assistant hasn’t understood the task properly they will be doing the whole thing completely wrong.

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES.

Power outages and time differences can often make working with a virtual assistant overseas challenging. There are also different public holidays in other countries. Work ethics are different between cultures as well with some cultures being a little ‘lazier’ than others.

Although there are these disadvantages of outsourcing, it’s definitely worth the headaches. The positive benefit you receive from a quality trustworthy virtual assistant can’t be ignored. They are extremely cheap (as little as $2.50 an hour!) and highly efficient. To successfully manage the disadvantages of outsourcing it is critical that you:

BE SLOW TO HIRE AND QUICK TO FIRE.

One of the big disadvantages of outsourcing overseas is that often these people are absolutely desperate for some income and tend to bend the truth a little. The biggest tip I can give is to interview A LOT of people and ask a lot of questions to really find out as much about them as you can. Ask to see previous work they have done, and references if any. The disadvantages of outsourcing really can be minimised if you take note of these types of things.

Something positive about outsourcing in countries overseas is that it gives someone in a poorer country a greater income which can help not just them – but often THEIR WHOLE COMMUNITY. Some countries are definitely better than others to outsource in and the disadvantages in choosing the wrong country can be HUGE.  I hire ALL of my virtual assistants in the Philippines for very good reasons. As an entrepreneur, time is the most valuable thing we have. You can get money back. You CAN NEVER get time back. As an Internet network marketer I need to be spending my time on the phone and creating great content – NOT LINK BUILDING! It is important to remember the 20 80 rule when operating your network marketing business as I wrote about recently. What are the 20% of things you do each day that create 80% of your results??

This article has highlighted some of the disadvantages of outsourcing, but do not let the disadvantages of outsourcing deter you from hiring people abroad. Expect to interview between 10 and 20 people to find the good few you need. Hire people you get along well with and feel comfortable with. Once you do find some good people – you can save yourself a great deal of time in your business by getting them to do the repetitive mundane tasks you don’t enjoy. This gives you more time to operate in your CORE GENIUS – those tasks which you excel at. We always need to be focusing on our strengths!!

    1. Yes, great tips. I do outsource some too, and learned that lastpass allows you to share your passwords without really giving them access to what they are. Always set clear goals of what you want accomplished and they will feel that they are making you happy when they accomplish them. Keep thinking smart like a business owner to go far in your success dream.

Absolutely Alecia.. thanks for stopping by.

    3. Outsourcing can be a mess sometimes, but one tip I can add to the ones you have already mentioned is that it is clever if you hold on to the best workers you get. It is possible to get someone who is determined to give the best results and you can train them on doing some of the jobs that do not require very technical skills instead of wasting a lot of time and money looking for other freelancers. That is how I work by the way.

    4. Thanks a lot for these tips Luke. Outsourcing can be frustrating sometimes and therefore having clear goals of what needs to be achieved helps a lot.
